MySpace points MyAds at small businesses
MySpace launches MyAds program

On Monday MySpace officially launched MyAds, a self service advertising platform which TechCrunch described as a possible 'Google Moment' for the social network. The program opens up a huge market for small business advertisers but it faces some obvious challenges. E-Consultancy quickly listed five problem areas including the mindset of social network users but they also identified targeting as a key consideration. MySpace has been tracking user behavior so that it can now go beyond the usual demographics to the realm of 'hypertargeting'. ReadWriteWeb described how advertisers can select on unique categories such as 'partying' and 'drinking'.

The program is likely to get a lot of attention from small budgets desperately looking for new online advertising solutions. eBrandz spoke with some of the early adapters who reported favorable results and eCommerce Times blogged about the positive steps that MySpace was taking to condition their audience for the highly targeted messages that they have already started to see.

Eyealike will use recognition technology to help publishers sell imaged based ads

Eyealike has announced the first contextual advertising system for images. ReelSEO described how the recognition technology, originally used to identify online dating partners, can now be used by publishers to provide image based targeting and to justify higher CPMs. TechCrunch remained skeptical that Eyealike could sufficiently boost their accuracy over earlier implementations to make the system viable. The potential remains huge for certain publishers, as AltSearchEngines described how Eyealike plans to unlock the potential of an increasingly visual web.

Meebo's message is growing
Technorati has purchased ad network AdEngage

Web based messaging has been a solid performer for walled sites such as Facebook and Myspace but it has been a logistical headache for smaller niche sites. Meebo has already become a $200 million dollar company by supplying in-browser messaging as a service and this week they announced several new partnerships that extends their reach to over 70 million users. Rotorblog detailed the new list of long tail sites that include Flixster, Nickelodeon and Fanpop. ReadWriteWeb feels that the potential for further growth is huge given the social web's insatiable desire for communication.
