Most Useful Online Marketing Posts of 2008

The most useful posts of 2008: Oceans of virtual ink kept track of every Microsoft/Yahoo plot twist. Steve Job's medical stats were discussed daily and much was micro-said about Twitter's sudden rise and its decision to leave Facebook at the altar. Back in the cubicles search marketing campaigns evolved, limited budgets looked lovingly at social media and ad networks braced for an economic tsunami. In short, a lot was learned (and shared) by those who kept their eyes focused on online profits in 2008 and 2009. Putting drama aside, don't miss our list of the posts that our hard working readers found the most useful, including the top ten posts for search, social networks, email, user experience and analytics.

Yahoo will forget personal data after three months
Yahoo turns the lights out on personal data after three months

On Wednesday Yahoo announced a 90 day data retention policy that places it ahead of Google and Microsoft (nine and eighteen months respectively). ClikckZ and Epicenter identified the privacy concerns that led to the move while Search Engine Journal detailed the changes and found the reaction to be extremely positive.

Search Engine Roudtable was one blog that encouraged Yahoo to take it a step further by removing individual query information and not just the IP identification. There were many questions asked about the move's ability to filter down to consumer preferences in their search engine choices. Ars technica pointed out that Yahoo was already operating at an advantage in that area, having made the TRUSTe/Ponemon Institute Top 20 list of most respected companies (along with newcomer Facebook). Google and Microsoft, alas, didn't make the cut this year.
