During a relatively quiet week Twitter made two announcements about a future built upon two intertwined revenue streams.
On Tuesday they announced the purchase of Gnip, a real time aggregator of social data of Facebook, Tumblr, Foursquare as well as Twitter. In December Apple had purchased competitor Topsy, a move that presumably sparked Twitter to own its own fire hose. While big data can lead to big advertising programs, Twitter seems to be interested in directly monetizing the information contained in Tweets, selling data about the products and sentiments coming across in 140 characters. Lighthouse Insights looked at all of the factors that made the data heavy Gnip an attractive target for Twitter.
Today Twitter announced a marketplace for mobile app install ads, which has been a big money maker for Facebook. The enabler in this case is Mopub, a mobile advertising exchange that Twitter purchase last September. AdExchanger looked at how the program will work and its prospects based in part on results from early beta testers.
