Pinterest's new feel for Pins
Pinterest's growth has exposed a glaring weakness -- the inability to provide an effective search function tailored for images. In January they purchased VisualGraph with the promise to 'combine machine vision with human vision' to deliver Pins that inspire. On April 24 Pinterest took the next step and announced Guided Search, a tag based system that was explained as 'Serendipitous Fun' in Technologizer.
Guided Search could have a significant effect on Pinterest if users begin to rely more on search and less upon the Boards that they follow to deliver relevant content. VisualGraph provides the ability to 'read' images but, as Spout Social points out, the text description of Pins will now also become more important for Pinterest visibility.
Pinterest will be able to strengthen its internal meta data. They will now have a more educated guess that a user interested in 'food porn' is looking at cupcakes and not something else. On the internet, improved search always brings new advertising although it is too early to speculate on how Pinterest will monetize its sweetened user data.
