Facebook Groups grow up
Facebook Groups was one of the early popular apps that helped to create the world's largest social network. This week Facebook announced a new modern, mobile version of Groups for both Android and iOS. Facebook continued its trend towards replicating core Facebook features as standalone mobile apps, as they have already done with Messenger and, arguably, Instagram. The new app has group discovery functionality that was not previously available and, unlike with Messenger, the already existing functionality is not being stripped out of the core Facebook apps.
PC World published a 'hands on' showing off the app they claim “you'll actually want to use”. Fast Company's Harry McCracken looked at the new app from a user perspective, agreeing that the stand alone, unbundling makes sense (at least for heavy users). Silicon Angle offered a primer on how Groups work, including an effort to explain the difference between Groups and Rooms.
