the time factor

Buying Time

Back in 2012 Facebook marketers could manage the News Feed algorithm via the three factors of Edgerank: Affinity (network relationship), Weight (user action), and Decay (recency). 2015 has become way more complicated and this week Facebook added something new -- the time spent viewing a post can now affect future rankings. The B2C blog published good explanations of how and why Facebook is making this latest News Feed change.

Social Media Today was one of several blogs who saw a connection to Instant Articles, Facebook's recent effort to have rich content hosted on Facebook instead of requiring users to leave via external link. The creepiness factor was addressed by the blog ProPR. Facebook is often regarded as the place where user privacy goes to die but at least users have had to actively signal their interest in a post. Now Facebook will be recording their interest without them taking any deliberate action.
