Panda 4.2 / Google+

Google has been rolling out a Panda refresh for the last week or so. It has been easy to miss because it is being rolled out slowly (over months) and a 'refresh' means that the same signals are in place and websites are being re-evaluated based on their latest content. The SEM Post published everything we know about Panda 4.2 and the Search Metrics Blog was one of those searching for and reporting on any ranking changes.

A much quicker pace is being set as Google+ is being stripped of many of its responsibilities. This week Google announced that they were dropping the use of Google+ accounts as required identities for communicating on YouTube. The original strategy for Google+ seemed to rely on a bundling of Google products (Gmail, YouTube, etc...) to pop start a huge social network. Now they are admitting that it is time for a 'pivot'. The blogs are surprisingly optimistic about the future of Google+. The Social Media Hat was one that felt that Google+ could thrive as a place where people gather around shared interests, perhaps more like Reddit and less like the Friend based Facebook. ReelSEO explained why engagement on YouTube will increase. This move by Google, while perhaps painful, seems to point to a healthier 2016.
