Google's machines

RankBrain

Cars aren't the only things that Google machines are learning to drive.

During their 3Q earnings call Google revealed that their third most important ranking signal is delivered by something called "RankBrain", an artificially intelligent machine learning system. RankBrain's main job is to help discern the intent of unconventionally phrased queries, particularly the daily 15% of queries that Google is seeing for the first time.

Kristine Schachinger guest posted in Search Engine Land to place RankBrain into the overall context of Google semantic search and provided examples of how Google returns dramatically different results when it has a good handle on intent. Danny Sullivan took notes on a 'Machine Learning 101' event that attempted to explain Google's framework for machine learning (he also published a FAQ with everything SEL knew about RankBrain's effect on the overall algorithm.

Forbes looked at what RankBrain will mean for SEO and AdWeek listed six ways that RankBrain could impact search marketing. Intent remains the key factor and content that delivers in a clear voice will likely be as popular with machines as it is with humans.
