On to the lock screen

Locked In?

894 million mobile daily active users make Facebook the dominant channel for reaching people who are using their phones. Yesterday, Facebook moved on to people who are not using their phones by announcing Notify, a standalone app that will give content providers increased access to lock screens via targeted push notifications.

The blog Pocket Lint explained the basics of how Notify works and TechCrunch did a deep dive on how Facebook designed the user interface along with their preemptive strategies for monitoring and mitigating any notification overload issues.

The best contrast/comparison to the role of Twitter was offered by The Next Web. Wired described how difficult it could be to separate useful notifications from spam and VentureBeat reminded everyone that, for mobile attention, it is usually best to follow Facebook's lead.
