Twitter's new conversation

Conversation Starters

The first significant new social marketing opportunity of 2016 was announced by Twitter on Tuesday. “Conversational ads” is a novel attempt to allow marketers to kickstart earned media exposure via a paid social ad. Refreshingly, it is a new concept and not something simply ported over from Facebook or Google.

Advertisers will be able to promote a question with two multiple choice options; the user's response is essentially re-tweeted, giving the advertiser unlimited earned/free exposure on top of their paid placement. VentureBeat provided a walk-through with more detail about how the program will work, admitting that it would not be “without some awkwardness”.

TechCrunch saw cause for optimism, calling the new ads ”a more effective way to encourage participation“. Ad Age suggested that it was a way for more brands to enjoy the benefits of influencer marketing.

Early adopters of the conversational ads will likely already know that earned media is not guaranteed to be positive media, as McDonalds learned painfully in 2012 when their #McDStories hashtag earned a response of #McDHorrorStories.
