The new Messenger

The message platform

Facebook sent a clear message this week about the next big marketing platform when they announced a series of marketing enhancements to their Messenger app. Shortly after Facebook VP David Marcus had lamented on the under powered status of the current 30K Messenger chatbots, a new round of changes will allow for payments, customization, sharing and the ability to send users to chatbots from paid Facebook News Feed ads. Marketing Land offered a comprehensive list of the new features and Facebook updated its developer blog to provide a complete listing of all Messenger marketing features.

The most fundamental of the changes is the ability for a chatbot to accept a credit card payment using Messenger profile data. Users will no longer need to go to a web page or external app to complete a purchase. Whatever their monetization plans may be, Facebook said that they will never ask for a cut of the payment.

What's next? Potential buyers who may need advice or coordinate a group purchase may soon be able to do so within chatrooms, according to some hidden code discovered by TechCrunch.
