Welcome Google Home

Home Invasion

For years now, digital marketers have been told that mobile is where the action is. This week, Google summoned everyone back inside for the arrival of Google Home (a smart speaker that is similar to, but smarter than Amazon's Echo). They also announced an advanced Wi-Fi system designed to cover even the largest homes and carefully allocate bandwidth to where it is needed most. For consumers who might wish to go outside anyway, Google announced an iPhone competitor with the highest rated camera of any phone.

The blogs focused on two key factors that were evidenced in all of the announcements. Google Assistant is being pushed as the new natural language, artificially intelligent interface with Google's universe. Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan wrote about a new generation of hands free search that Google views with the same significance that it once gave to desktop and then mobile.

The other essential take away is that Google is now heavily committed to creating its own hardware. Five years after the loss of Steve Jobs, Google has officially adopted his model of hardware/software integration and control. Walt Mossberg explained the huge significance of Google as a device maker and Social Media Today brought together all of the week's announcements from the perspective of social media marketers.
