Through Pinterest's Lens

A thousand words

Snapchat and Instagram may have to step aside in their quests for social media visual supremacy. Last month, Pinterest discovery engineer Kevin Ma described Pinterest's efforts to use machine learning to recommend Pins. Then, yesterday, Pinterest announced three new features that seem to weaponize that research to provide breakthroughs in visual search and discovery.

The shiniest of the new features is called Lens and it allows users to take a picture and be presented with related Pins. Venture Beat provided the details of how Lens will work. In its engineering blog Pinterest proudly offered the example that taking pictures of strawberries will return recipe ideas and not simply other pictures of strawberries.

Instant Ideas is a new feature that is obviously built upon the machine learning research. Users will be able to tap a circle on a Pin to be presented with related ideas. The third feature, Shop The Look, will analyze a Pin to recommend individual accessories that can compliment an article of clothing in the Pin. TechCrunch put Pinterest's visual search efforts in context along with the marketing implications.

Marketers, still grappling with the effects of voice search now have images to contend with as well. Text search just doesn't look the same anymore.
