Does Google +1 add up? Google unveiled their '+1' button yesterday, allowing users to express approval of a particular search result, either organic or paid. Search Engine Land provided a detailed look at the program and Jeff Bullas offered a shorter look at how '+1' will work. The service is slowly being rolled out to people with Google Profiles but it can be turned on manually at Google Labs. Many blogs expressed doubt that '+1' will gain user acceptance as it is currently structured. ZD Net's Googling Google made the case that '+1' will slow down the instant gratification aspect of search that the engines have been pushing so heavily. Users have to either approve a search result sight unseen or remember to backtrack after viewing the result. Google has said that there will be a plugin available to sites which will help and they created a wait list for publishers who wanted one. In addition to the cumbersome user experience questions are also being asked about the user's motivation for the button. Any approved links will be shown to connections within Google's network (Google has a page that shows exactly who is in a user's network) and Google alluded to future Twitter integration. The value of using the button to approve an ad was questioned by Social Beat - is it an alternative call to action that could dilute CTR? Interestingly, one of the more positive assessments came from Inside Facebook, who feels that it may be an attractive alternative to the Like button. -- Also this week: Facebook Questions was upgraded. Inside Facebook compiled a good look at how they will work and Sprout Social did the how-to for adding Questions to a Page. Ebrandz explained the differences between Facebook Questions and Quora in that Questions are better designed to get multiple choice poll answers from Friends as opposed to Quora style essays. |
